Xiang Yu has always held a singular place in my heart; his brand of 'heroism' moves me profoundly. No amount of time or effort is too great to capture the essence of this peerless hero—his fierce progression, unyielding integrity, and indomitable spirit. He remains the incomparable 'Overlord' (Ba Wang) of Chinese history; though he never ascended the throne as Emperor, Sima Qian’s Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) honored him by including him in the 'Basic Annals' (Benji), a category reserved for monarchs.
In traditional opera, Xiang Yu’s Lianpu (facial mask) and stage presence are strikingly distinctive. Even his attire is exclusive: the 'Overlord’s Armor' (Bawang Kao) in black, adorned with flat gold embroidery, which radiates both formidable might and a grand, tragic pathos.
The composition of this painting draws inspiration from the classic postures of Peking Opera. I have seized a quintessential stance that best manifests Xiang Yu’s spirit and strength, prioritizing the Qiyun (vital rhythm) of the piece. Using the fluid, cursive techniques of Caoshu calligraphy to render his garments and dynamic momentum, I completed the work in a single, continuous breath, achieving a unified and powerful atmosphere.
