髯是胡须的意思，苍髯指的就是银白色的胡须。在京剧艺术中，人物所戴的髯口，按照年龄分白、苍、黑三色，按人物性格分三髯、满髯、扎髯三种。有一个成语叫“苍髯如戟”，是指胡须又长又硬，一根根像戟似地怒张着，体现出大丈夫气概。

In the art of Peking Opera, the artificial beards worn by actors—known as Rankou—are categorized by color (white, grizzled, or black) to indicate age, and by style (triple-parted, full-beard, or flared) to reflect character. There is an idiom, 'A grizzled beard like halberds', describing a beard so long and stiff that each strand bristles like a weapon—an embodiment of the great man spirit.

This painting does not depict a specific character, but rather a state of being. 'Lian Po is old; can he still relish his meal?' 'A hero in his twilight years still harbors a magnificent ambition.' References to old age often carry a tinge of desolation, yet the twilight of life can also be vigorous and forceful. The 'Cang' in 'Cang Ran' is by no means a sign of pallid weakness; instead, it is a potent symbol of enduring strength.
