Ascending on Clouds | 2021 | 120cm x 50cm | Acrylic on canvas

Ascending on Clouds is my seminal work of 2021, and it holds a place of profound significance in my heart.

While creating this piece, I rediscovered that long-awaited state where the 'heart and hand act as one.' The inspiration flowed from the Peking Opera performance of the Great Sage playing with his Lingzi (long pheasant tail feathers). In that rhythmic display, his innate wit, bravery, and his fiery intolerance for injustice seem to be vividly manifested through every flourish of the feathers. In this painting, the essence of the Lingzi forms a linear flow in the shape of a heart.

The 'negative space' (Liubai) on the left side of the canvas serves both as a release for Wukong’s power and a balance for the overall rhythm. The expression of the Great Sage, particularly the piercing gaze in his eyes, feels as though it is about to leap from the canvas, striking directly at the soul of the viewer.
