Jiao Zan was a formidable general of the Song Dynasty. As a commander of the northern army resisting the Liao invaders, he carries the spirited shadow of Li Kui from Water Margin.

In the Romance of the Yang Family Generals, Jiao Zan served under Yang Yanzhao, earning fame across the Hebei region alongside his comrade Meng Liang. Known for his mastery of the iron spear and his forthright, jovial nature, he commanded great respect within the Lulin (outlaw) community. A close look at his Peking Opera Lianpu (facial mask) reveals the shape of a plantain leaf—complete with a few faint laughter lines. The leaf symbolizes his past as the chieftain of Plantain Mountain.

The most striking feature of this painting is the exaggerated depiction of his visage. His head follows an 'incorrect' anatomical proportion; as the traditional painting canon dictates, 'a martial general should have no neck' (Wujiang Wu Xiang). Consequently, his neck appears remarkably short. These deliberate exaggerations are all employed to manifest the surging momentum of a warrior on the brink of departure for battle.
