'A loyalty that pierces the sun and moon; a righteousness that reaches the towering clouds.' The unyielding spirit of Lord Guan (Guan Gong) has always been a source of profound strength for me. He is not only an indispensable general in Chinese history but a supreme hero in the hearts of the Chinese people. 'In the Peach Garden, he pledged a brotherhood as vast as the heavens; his Green Dragon Crescent Blade glints with a chilling edge. Riding alone for a thousand miles, he breached five passes and vanquished six generals, shaking the very foundations of the earth.' In Peking Opera, over forty 'Guan Yu plays' have emerged, even giving rise to a unique role category—the Hongsheng (Red-faced lead). Clad in green Kao (armor) and wearing the Fuzi helmet, Lord Guan’s entrance never fails to draw thunderous applause.
In creating this piece, I drew inspiration from the Lianpu (facial masks) of these operas, using a vibrant red visage to manifest his character. The individual scales of his armor are adorned with yellow tassels, and I have sought to convey the fundamental texture of the suit through the interplay of light and shadow. The treatment of the substantial and the void is bold and expansive; the fluid, ornate lines of the foreground attire evoke a semi-abstract beauty—precisely the transcendent, sagely aura I wished to capture.
