In the art of Peking Opera, the blue Lianpu (facial mask) of Dou Erdun possesses an extraordinary visual tension. Dou Erdun is a heroic outlaw from the Qing Dynasty chivalric novel The Cases of Lord Shi. Defined by a sense of righteousness since youth, he was always ready to draw his blade to help the oppressed, eventually becoming a legendary figure of the Lulin (outlaw) community.

In both opera and folklore, Dou Erdun is a hero of his generation. Despite his peerless martial skills, he never used his strength to bully others; instead, he aided the distressed and relieved the poor. It is this unwavering sense of justice—of suppressing the violent and pacifying the good—that moves me most profoundly.

I am drawn to the inherent tension of this character: the blue mask symbolizing fierce bravery and the exaggerated, infectious red beard. In that singular moment of a static Liangxiang (pose), I seek to convey a dynamic image that strikes the viewer with an electric shock.

My creative approach combines the rhythmic brushwork of calligraphy with Western techniques of light, shadow, texture, and volume. By utilizing natural color grains and textures, I aim to create a vivid effect where the figure seems ready to leap from the canvas.
